# Anger

> Heat that can illuminate or burn

Anger reveals attachment and ego. The saints teach self-control, humility, and seeing clearly before you act.

## Overview

Anger is energy—often righteous, often reactive. Unexamined, it wounds; witnessed, it can clarify a boundary or injustice. Ramakrishna warned against the “unripe I”; Ramana asked you to remain the witness; Vivekananda insisted on strength without cruelty. Spiritual work with anger is honesty plus restraint.

## Spiritual perspective

Before speaking from anger, notice who wants to win. When the ego softens, the same fire can become clarity, courage, or protective care—without scorched earth.

## Practices

- Delay the reply: feel the heat in the body for one full minute before acting.
- Ask: “What am I protecting?”—often fear or hurt sits under the flame.
- Practice a few rounds of longer exhales to discharge activation.
- If harm was done, repair with humility; if a boundary is needed, state it cleanly without venom.

## When it shows up

- Sharp words you regret later
- Resentment that replays old scenes
- Feeling disrespected or powerless
- Tight fists, hot face, or restless agitation

## Teachings from the sages

### Ramakrishna Paramahamsa

> “A man cannot realize God unless he gets rid of all egotistic ideas.”

Much anger is the “unripe I” defending its territory. Softening ego does not mean becoming a doormat—it means refusing to let pride drive destruction.

### Ramana Maharshi

> “One should remain as a witness to whatever happens.”

Witness-consciousness lets you feel anger without becoming it. From that distance, wise response becomes possible.

### Swami Vivekananda

> “The fire that warms us can also consume us; it is not the fault of the fire.”

Anger, like fire, is energy. With self-control it clarifies; without it, it consumes. Vivekananda taught that the responsibility lies in how we handle these forces—not in denying that they exist.
