# Anxiety

> Meet worry with presence, not force

Anxiety pulls the mind into imagined futures. The sages invite you back to the living present—and to the Self that is already whole.

## Overview

Anxiety is the mind rehearsing danger before it arrives. The saints did not dismiss fear; they taught methods to rest beneath it: breath, faith, witness-awareness, and the quiet discovery that you are more than the worried thought. This guidance is spiritual companionship—not a substitute for professional care when you need it.

## Spiritual perspective

Worry lives in “what if.” Peace lives in “what is.” Returning to the breath, the body, or the simple sense of I-am interrupts the spiral and reveals a ground that anxiety cannot fully occupy.

## Practices

- Place a hand on the heart or belly and feel three slow exhales longer than the inhales.
- Name the worry once, then ask: “What remains when this thought is not believed?”
- Use a short box-breathing or mindful breathing practice to settle the body.
- Repeat a steadying affirmation such as “I am the soul, free and eternal” while resting in the breath.

## When it shows up

- Racing thoughts about the future
- Difficulty resting or falling asleep
- Avoiding decisions out of fear of getting it wrong
- A constant low hum of unease

## Teachings from the sages

### Ramana Maharshi

> “Engage yourself in the living present. The future will take care of itself.”

Ramana pointed out that the future is only a thought in the present. Anxiety spends the only reality you have—the Now—on scenes that may never come. Presence is the antidote.

### Swami Vivekananda

> “Be a hero. Always say, I have no fear.”

Vivekananda used courageous affirmation as a form of autosuggestion: aligning the personality with the fearless nature of the Atman. Spoken sincerely with the breath, it can quiet the anxious mind.

### Ramakrishna Paramahamsa

> “The winds of grace are always blowing, but you have to raise the sail.”

Grace is available, but anxiety often lowers the sail. Small practices—prayer, breath, sincerity—raise it again so support can move you forward.
