# Fear

> Courage is remembering who you are

Fear shrinks life. The saints taught that strength and divinity are already within you—waiting to be claimed.

## Overview

Fear protects the body, but when it rules the mind it becomes a prison. Vivekananda thundered against weakness; Ramana invited enquiry into who is afraid; Ramakrishna pointed to faith and a childlike heart. Working with fear spiritually means neither fighting it nor obeying it blindly—meeting it with truth.

## Spiritual perspective

Fear thrives when you believe you are only a fragile body and a fragile story. Remembering the Self—or taking one brave right action—breaks the spell. Courage is not the absence of fear; it is movement from a deeper identity.

## Practices

- When fear arises, pause and feel it in the body without adding a story for thirty seconds.
- Ask: “Who is afraid?” and rest as the awareness that notices the fear.
- Take one small courageous action today that aligns with your values.
- Read or speak a fearlessness quote slowly, as if tasting each word.

## When it shows up

- Avoiding necessary conversations or changes
- Catastrophizing before events
- Clinging to safety at the cost of growth
- Feeling small in the face of life

## Teachings from the sages

### Swami Vivekananda

> “Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached.”

Vivekananda’s call from the Katha Upanishad is a remedy for fear-induced lethargy. To awake is to realize innate divinity; once you know you are not merely the limited body, fear loses its ultimate claim.

### Swami Vivekananda

> “The greatest sin is to think yourself weak.”

In Advaita, thinking yourself weak is a lie against your nature as Atman. Strength and compassion flow from recognizing that divinity—not from pretending fear never visits.

### Ramana Maharshi

> “Be Still.”

Stillness is not passivity. When the I-thought that fuels fear is quieted, the Self shines. Fear often dissolves not by analysis, but by resting as the silent ground beneath it.
